We recommend you read the full report — in it, we go into detail about everything you need to know about spam call and text trends, from the most common scam types to which states are receiving the most spam per capita. Just in case you’re short on time (be sure to bookmark the report to jump in later), here are a couple key findings you should know about.

Spam texts are growing in volume and impact

Robotexts consistently hovered between 10-15 billion from January to June, averaging 13 billion per month. The 78 billion spam texts Americans received marked an 18% increase over the same timeframe last year. Predictably, financial losses also vaulted to $13 billion, a major leap from last year’s $9 billion.

Bottom line: Scammers are getting more aggressive and effective, so it’s imperative to stay alert and cautious when receiving any SMS messages.

Spam calls are declining, but becoming costlier

Spam calls are actually on the decline — Americans received 21% fewer robocalls in the first half of 2023 compared to the first half of 2022. Even so, losses are piling up. Scammers stole $33 billion via scam call between January and June compared to last year’s $30 billion. This suggests fraudsters are becoming more efficient and targeted in their scams.

The good news is, government efforts to curb the likes of car warranty and student loan scams proves there’s a path to minimize the impact of robocall scams. In the meantime, remain diligent and don’t pick up the phone unless you’re certain who’s on the other end.
