Stop Robocalls

Robocalls are unsolicited phone calls with prerecorded messages. These calls have increased in recent years because technology has made it cheap and easy for robocallers to make calls from anywhere in the world while hiding their identities by displaying fake Caller ID information.

These unwanted calls fall into two large categories; robocalls and telemarketing calls. Robocalls are automated telephone calls that deliver a recorded message, and are not directed by a live caller on the other line. Telemarketing Calls are live direct marketing calls in which a salesperson solicits prospective customers to buy products or services.

How Do I Stop Robocalls?

The phone network is a complex web of carriers and solutions providers, making it difficult for most providers to put an end to robocalls for good. Federal Communications Commission recommends registering your phone number(s) on the National Do Not Call Registry at DoNotCall.gov, as it is illegal for any telemarketer to call anyone on the list – whether making a live call or using a prerecorded message.

Because 65% of illegal robocalls occur outside of the United States, it is nearly impossible for the FTC to track, block, and reprimand offenders; especially those of whom ignore the Do Not Call Registry. In 2016, 45% of individuals who registered for the Do Not Call list received a robocall within 10 days of registering.

Letting RoboCalls through

Other call blocking strategies, such as contacting your phone carrier about a single repeat offender, can be helpful. Carriers have been slow to respond to consumer demands to build wide-scale robocall blocking technologies into their provided services.

The FCC and FTC cannot order phone companies to provide anti-robocall technology, but so far more than 327,000 people have signed this year’s EndRobocalls.org petition calling for carriers to advance their resources available to put an end to Robocalls.
